For about a week, i have been helping...well guiding actually, a student who wanted to apply for a place in Britain. She is good, no she is better than me her lecturer. in fact she is the best when it comes to having a flair in both speaking and writing and of course other skills as well.
She was my student in semester1 and she would normally sit at the back of the class, observing me quietly. First, she was polite and quite reserved, only spoke to a few close friends but gradually, i detected a better, warmer responses from her, especially when i assigned her to be the MUET group mentor. No doubt she is very capable in many aspects. Friends started to chat with her, yet the reserved respect was still a secret barrier. Knowing that others were shy, she approached them and later, they got along well.
This semester she is placed in another tutorial, yet that did not stop her from coming to me.So when she came and explained her intention of doing psychology/speech therapy, i did not have any doubt that she would be given a chance to pursue her dream.....she was a 4-flat student, her interpersonal skills are very much admired, she took parts in many college activities beside lending her hands in tutorials, laboratory work and involved in many local and international quizzes and competitions. An all rounder she is......
Silently i admire her dedication in studies and her willingness to go extra miles to gain as much experience as possible in her life. I think she gains more in her 18 years compared to my 48 years......this i have to admit. And nothing is going to stop her and there is no reasons why someone should stop her.
Today, i submitted my reference statement to support her application and i wished her all the best. She deserves the best too. before she left my place this evening, we chatted for a while about life and experience and contributions to society. What surprised me was her request: Madam, may i give you a hug? I said sure and happily gave her a bear hug. By the way, she is a Chinese..................
