Well, sometimes, my colleagues and i just cannot understand how to reach the students, how to prepare them so that they will be able to present the points confidently and successfully. No matter how much practice we have done, their presentation is still way way behind the expectation.....but i must give this account student a sincere salute because they are really into it, trying and trying, ignoring their nervousness, hiding their jittery, clasping their cold hands and yet they belasah...........i like this......
We actually admire their effort, but it is just not enough to make them feel confident in the actual test in a few weeks time....in their struggle to give the best performance, they unconsciously make us laugh and laugh....why? it is because they are very super creative because they can change the pronunciation, the words, the expressions, the styles.....and even the responses....let me share with you some funny things our students said;
Please read and identify the errors....1. Good morning madam examinist......this is a newly coined word....my friend said: Hai...next time i will become a communist......
2. Yes, i am angry with you.....adui....who ask you to be angry????? must be the influence of Angry Bird.
3. We can go to the bunk.......take note...not bank.
4. We can go to the beach to see the water and the sand.....mak oi..... if a 2 year old girl says like this, i can still accept, but a college student?
5.We can go and visit Minangkabau house in Melaka.....well, there is one in Mini Asean...but the actual design is seen in ........you know where, right?
Well, this might look funny but actually it hurts our hearts listening to all these naive/ignorant/confused answers from the students.....people might say, so what are you English lecturers doing? You must help them....well help we did but speaking is not the skill that you can grab in a few months....it should start from the beginning of school days......and it should be one main skill back in school....
Nobody is blaming anybody, though....they are the product of our own system....we try to achieve so much with so many programs but in the end, nothing much materialize.....and here we are given only 6 months to prepare students for all the 4 skills ....it is impossible to accomplish this..especially when English is not a compulsory subject to be taken into GPA......so until the end, we are actually fighting a losing battle.......yet, being true teachers, we will strive and strive we will till we see some rays of hope for our Malaysian students.
